Return visit to a favourite garden

The thing with gardens is that they are always changing and growing, they are never truly “finished”. So it’s great to return to past gardens you have put together and see how your ideas have turned out. We did this just yesterday, returning to a home we landscaped about a year and a half ago. It is one of the original cottages of the area and is set off a busy main road with a fantastic sized front garden and a small courtyard style back area. Thank you to Marie and Tony for having us back.

The owners needed lots of places to park cars with extended family gatherings a standard event here. The house is set back from a busy main road so off the street parking for visitors is a must. This area off the driveway acts as occasional parking space. It also allows access to the all-important clothesline, utility area.

Sandstone stepping pads
This is the space 18 months on with the Leighton Green hedge rapidly screening off the neighbours and the plants filling the spaces nicely.
Silver plectranthus
The Silver Plectranthus used as a low planting line in front of the Leighton Green hedge gives a nice layered effect which softens and gives depth. The original Peppertree is surrounded by Liriope and a sandstone garden edge.
Driveway
The grassed area on the left can be used as a parking area when family and friends come over. The grass has been planted on Grass-Cel blocks that can support the heavy wear and tear of cars parking on the area. The long driveway is asphalt with a sawn sandstone border. The sandstone has been placed at intervals along the driveway to break up the expanse. The ivy on the right hand side will eventually become a green wall with the neighbouring trees being “borrowed” to form a green backdrop.
Windflowers
The long driveway circles around the side of the house to the garage. The windflowers sweeping along the edge are in full bloom at the moment and look spectacular.
Hydrangea
Once considered an “old lady” flower the Hydrangea is a wonderful plant that is enjoying a deserved come back with many new hybrids available. Here they form part of a complimentary mixed planting pallet used to give a cottage garden feel.
Olive tree
The side of the house enjoys full sun. An Olive tree has been transplanted from another part of the garden. With outdoor lighting it casts a wonderful shadow against the sandstone wall. In time it will grow and become an wonderful feature tree.

The entry from the driveway to the verandah has a curved sawn sandstone tiled area set into the asphalt. It gives the house a defined entrance that reflects and compliments the sandstone cottage.
